Developing and building IT infrastructure for the Kandym gas fields as part of the largest investment project in Uzbekistan
2016
Project Objectives
Сoncept for building a unified software
Building of an integrated software and hardware environment to support IT systems, radio and telephone communication systems, as well as an operations and dispatch communication system designed to ensure safe and effective operation of facilities at the Kandym group fields developed.
Integration
Integration of telecommunication and IT infrastructure of the Kandym group fields with the company's IT and communication system
Plans for Kandym fields development include a scope of activities for construction a unique production facility consisting of over 100 gas production wells, a collection system, a gas refining plant with expected capacity of 8.1 billion cubic meters/year, an export gas pipeline with a length of almost 60 km, a railway approach, a motor road network, water supply and external energy supply systems.
As part of the Kandym Early Gas project, the company has already built over 170 km of power lines, a power substation, over 180 km of pipelines, almost 240 km of fiber optic communication lines, 150 km of motor roads and 7 motor bridges.
For project implementation, the company used ENTER Engineering and Hyundai Engineering Construction as general contractors and IT Professional Solutions-Asia as a system integrator. IT infrastructure was implemented in parallel with construction of other 17 facilities in the fields.
Infrastructure built includes almost 20 servers, around 50 radio stations, 250 loud speakers, almost 240 km of fiber optic communication lines, etc.

The Kandym group of fields is located in a zone with severe climatic conditions: severe winters, hot dry summers, sharp temperature fluctuations within a 24-hour period, and sand storms. Therefore, specialists used solutions which ensure reliable operation of IT infrastructure within the described climatic conditions. In addition, natural gas produced at Kandym group fields has a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide which requires that technical regulations applicable in Uzbekistan and international standards are strictly adhered to when an asset is designed, constructed and operated.

IT Professional Solutions-Asia successfully integrated both telecom and IT systems at all new field facilities constructed by different EPC contractors and solutions with asset operator corporate information systems. This approach, in which IT infrastructure is created by a single system integrator with industry expertise has helped to lay a reliable IT foundation for effective operation of the fields within a specified timeframe.
IT Professional Solutions-Asia’s close cooperation with all project stakeholders and its comprehensive approach to the project resulted in the construction of a high-quality IT infrastructure as part of the investment program.
As the project had a very tight schedule, different activities were performed in parallel. Thus, the materials were procured at the same time as the systems were developed.

To ensure effective use of the implemented systems, engineers stayed at the fields during the trial operation period. In this period, they continued training and providing support to customer personnel and adjusted the system configuration taking into account the customer’s feedback.

Result
Within strict time constraints, made IT services available for 17 new infrastructure facilities based at the Kandym fields, laying the foundation for asset intellectualization. As the facilities are located far away from each other and from the corporate center, it had to plan logistics very carefully, distribute team members between field sites strategically and make sure it was possible to remotely manage a complicated IT infrastructure and monitor the status of its components. For this purpose, implemented a central monitoring and control system, which made it possible to manage a larger IT infrastructure effectively without increasing the number of personnel at remote sites.

Today the customer has a new reliable system built in-line with international best practices for IT infrastructure from leading production companies. Field IT services operate without interruptions 24/7, while ensuring field communication with the corporate center and subscribers anywhere in the world.

The IT infrastructure built at the fields of the Kandym group forms the basis for the asset’s intellectualization. This innovative approach to production facility management requires implementation of a whole set of advanced technical, process and organizational solutions to ensure proper communication between all components and entities of production activity management, while enabling continuous refinement of performance indicators. The experience of leading global oil and gas companies shows that field intellectualization helps to reduce costs, minimize losses, and maximize production over the entire field development lifecycle.

When developing a telecom and IT infrastructure it took into account both field operator corporate standards and EPC contractor requirements in terms of delivery periods, solution design and pricing as well as integration.

As part of the project, we implemented and integrated the following systems amongst both themselves and the corporate information systems of the field operator:
  • uninterruptible power supply (APC)
  • dispatch and alarm system (Neumann)
  • information security system (Cisco, Juniper, CheckPoint)
  • IT system (HP)
  • structured cabling system (Legrand, DKC, Rittal, Nexans)
  • data communication network (Cisco)
  • telephone communication system (Alcatel)
  • control and monitoring system (HP BSM)
  • master clock system (MobaTime)
  • TETRA standard VHF radio system (ABDS, Sepura)
  • site fiber optic communication lines (Legrand, DKC, Nexans).
